Somerset Valley YMCA - Somerville, Hillsborough and Bridgewater
In addition to almost 100 hours of open lap swim per week, we offer the following aquatic programs to help you get and stay in shape:
Masters Swimming- (60 – 90 min. practices in Bridgewater)
This masters swimming group is designed to prepare individuals for the swimming portion of triathlons or for masters swimming competition. We utilize effective heart rate training methods, training cycles, and many other proven training principles. We also work on improving stroke efficiency and endurance. Whether or not you choose to compete, these practices allow
individuals to continually raise their fitness level, build their skills, and improve their performance.
AFYAP (Arthritis Foundation YMCA Aquatic Program) - (45 min. at Bridgewater & Somerville)
This class involves specific movements related to the joints and surrounding muscles affected by arthritis. These exercises help maintain normal joint movement, relieve stiffness, and can help to restore flexibility and movement. The three general categories of exercises utilized are: range of motion, strengthening, and conditioning.
AFYAP for Deep Water – (45 min. at Somerville)
This class involves range-of-motion, muscle strengthening and endurance-building activities in deep water. People with total joint replacements, shoulder problems, multiple joint involvement and moderate to severe joint involvement, osteoporosis or osteoarthritis should check with their doctor before participating in this program. This program is designed to help relieve the pain the stiffness caused by arthritis while providing a fun, social opportunity.
Ai Chi - (60 min. at Somerville)
Ai Chi is a Japanese water relaxation program combining deep breathing and slow broad movement of the arms, legs, and torso in flowing patterns. The technique includes an inward directed focus and awareness of the mind’s presence in various parts of the body. It is very relaxing and rejuvenating.
Aqua Exercise - (60 min. at Bridgewater, Hillsborough, and Somerville)
This program consists of a wide variety of exercises developed specifically for the water. This is an effective way of using the surfaces of one’s body to increase water resistance, to increase cardiovascular flow, and to develop the muscular system of the body. Appropriate for swimmers and non-swimmers.
Deep Water Exercise - (60 min. at Bridgewater & Somerville)
This class is a comprehensive, no-impact water exercise program using an aqua belt to assist buoyancy and balance in the deep end of the pool. The deep water allows more body surface to maintain pressure against the water. This allows for a weight exercise style, which tones the body, works the cardiovascular system, and builds endurance.
Water Pilates - (60 min. at Bridgewater and Somerville)
Pilates, creatively adapted to the water, develops strength, flexibility and improves posture. This program builds a stronger body core with fluidity and grace. It appeals to a variety of ages and fitness levels.
Water Walking - (45 min. at Bridgewater and Somerville)
This class contains a variety of walking styles enhanced by arm movements, using the buoyancy and resistance of the water. It is designed to improve posture, balance, and breathing while gently toning the body. This program is held in the shallow end of the pool.
